Self Defense Technique Biting

Biting

Biting is a powerful self defense technique that doesn’t require skill or power. You jaw muscles are some of the most powerful in your body and can inflict serious damage. It is not the best self defense move because it requires that you get close to your assailant but when used do serious harm.

When should you bite? I would only suggest biting if your assailant has a hold of you and you are not able to strike or gouge vulnerable areas.

Where should you bite? Anywhere you can. If you have the opportunity to bite more sensitive areas then do so but don’t waste valuable time thinking about it too much.

Biting technique: Again like scratching there is no specific technique. However, I would recommend that you commit fully to the bite and inflict as much pain as possible. Clamp on as if you are trying to rip the flesh from the bone and jerk your head. Once you’ve achieved your goal of breaking the grip of your assailant let go and begin to use more effective and powerful self defense moves like kicking them while down, groin strikes or breaking joints.

Self Defense Technique Scratching

Scratching

Scratching is another self defense technique that does not require a lot of strength but a lot of intensity. When fighting off an attacker one of the mental things that is important to consider is the psychological advantage. If just go absolutely nuts and don’t give up the attacker is less likely to stick around and will move on.

Scratching is not the most powerful self defense move but can be effective when combined with other moves or in the right time.

So when should you scratch? It should not be your first self defense move because it is not very powerful but if you attacker grabs hold of you and you can reach any exposed skin, especially the face, then start scratching. This should be used to free yourself and distract the assailant setting up a more powerful move like a groin kick or breaking a finger.

Scratching technique: There isn’t any special technique to scratching that works best, simply make sure that you do it with intensity and really dig in your fingernails. You may also want to make short quick swipes to do more damage. Long sweeping swipes will give your attacker that chance to block your attack or grab your arm.

Self Defense Technique Eye Gouge

The Eye Gouge – Self Defense Technique

The eye gouge is a very effective and simple self defense move. You it doesn’t require a lot of strength and can easily disable your attacker.

Some are hesitant to use such force when defending themselves and understandably. You have to know the difference between a life and death situation and a fight. However, if you feel it is a real self defense situation then you should not hesitate to use the eye gouge.

How to do the eye gouge: When facing your attacker simply act as if you are palming the side or cheek of your assailants face with your thumbs facing towards the opponents eyes. Then simply take your thumb and plunge it directly into your attacker’s eye socket using your palm as leverage. If you commit to this action you immediately disable your attacker if not indefinitely long enough to escape and get help.

List of Self Defense Weapons

Pepper Spray – is an moderately effective self defense weapon that is spray in the face of the attacker in order to temporarily disable them. There are three types of pepper sprays and they are made of different chemical compounds that cause different effects.

  • CS (Orthochlorobenzalmalonitrile)
  • CN (alphachloroacetaphenone)
  • OC (Oleoresin Capsicum)

CS / CN pepper sprays are irritants and cause stinging and tearing. They can take 5-30 seconds to take effect and may not be effective against those who are drunk, on drugs, psychotic or for some reason cannot feel pain. These types of pepper spray are basically tear gas and if someone is determined can fight through it.

OC pepper spray has a different chemical makeup and causes inflammation. The attackers eyes instantly swell shut and even if they managed to get them open them would be temporarily blinded because their capillaries will be dilated. Additionally, airways become inflamed and the assailant will double over coughing and only have life sustaining breathing.

Benefits: OC pepper spray is extremely effective if you are able to get a clear shot in the attackers face. You are able to create distance between you and your attacker. Also, you do not have to physically defend yourself.

Cons: Missing. If you miss then you risk the attacker closing the distance and getting a hold of you.

Stun Gun - A powerful self defense weapon that delivers an electrical charge to the person you touch with the two prongs at the end of the stun gun. Stun guns come in different sizes and voltage levels. The higher the voltage of your stun gun the more kick it will deliver to your assailant.

Stun guns quickly immobilize your attacker by momentarily disabling the body’s nervous system. However, due to the stun guns low amperage it does not do permanent damage.

Choosing the right Stun Gun. There are a lot of options for stun guns and there really isn’t a right answer. Simply consider your needs when determining size, amperage and the look. There are some stun guns that are disguised as cell phones or other objects.

Benefits: Highly effective and quick at immobilizing attackers.

Cons: most require your assailant to be within close range.

Collapsible Baton – The collapsible baton or telescopic steel baton is a very effective and deadly self defense weapon. One should be cautious before deciding it is necessary to use this weapon. It is perfect for offensive and defensive moves and packs a lot of punch.

Most police officers are issued collapsible batons in place of old billy clubs. Batons are convenient due to their small size while collapsed and how quickly they are deployed. With a flick of the wrist your baton is immediately expanded and will not collapse while you need it.

This baton can be kept in a purse, car or boot easily. If you strike an assailant with this weapon it will surely do damage regardless of where you strike and will make them think twice before continuing.

There are 3 different sizes of telescopic steel batons available and you can choose simply based on your preference or needs. You can choose from 16, 21, or 26 inch models.

Benefits: Convenience and Power.

Cons: Requires a physical confrontation, relatively close distance and strength.

Argument for Concealed Guns for Self Defense

Here is some great commentary on the value of guns for Self Defense. Not everyone likes guns until you need one.

(The following commentary, written by a Buckeye Firearms Association Southwest Ohio volunteer, has been published as a guest editorial in the Cincinnati Enquirer.)

By Jeff Riley

The first shooting occurred in a “gun free zone” at the Westroads Mall in Omaha, Neb. Nebraska allows residents who have passed the state’s criteria to carry a concealed handgun for self-defense except in prohibited areas. Nebraska law allows private businesses to prohibit concealed-carry at their business. The Westroads Mall had posted a sign prohibiting legal concealed-carry for self-defense.

The stated purpose is to “create a safe working and shopping environment for employees and customers.” Sadly, it provides the illusion of safety while virtually guaranteeing the opposite. Once they’ve disarmed you, these stores refuse to provide for your protection. No metal detectors, no searches to enforce their “no firearms” policy; most don’t even have armed security personnel. Are we to believe that a murderer is going to stop when they see a “no guns allowed” sign?

Only the criminal’s safety is guaranteed. Once all the law-abiding have been disarmed, and until the police arrive, they are free to commit murder/mayhem unopposed.

The second shooting occurred days later at the New Life Church in Colorado Springs. A gunman killed two people before being shot dead by a parishioner acting as a security guard using her personal weapon. The toll could have been much higher had she not been present.

People don’t stop killers. People with guns do. When seconds count, help may be minutes away. Businesses should allow lawful concealed carry for self-defense.

I would dare say nobody (except the gunman) in the Omaha mall was thinking, “Thank God that murderer is the only one here with a gun.” I think I can say that in the church shooting, many thought, “Thank God someone else besides the gunman had a gun.”

News Man Shoots Burglar to Protect Family

Although we don’t think about it often self defense laws are important to consider when electing government representatives. There are many who would like to take away or limit our rights to protect our homes and families. Even when a burglar is inside of our homes the lines are gray.

Here’s a story of a man who protected his family and killed the burglar entering his home.

Homeowner says fatal shooting was self-defense

A man who fatally shot a burglar coming in a window of his west Harris County home said the dead man may already have been shot at, possibly by another neighbor.

“There were bullet holes in my back fence,” Damon Barone said Monday from his home in the 3400 block of Cascadia.

Barone said he fired four shots at Steven Dunbar, who was found shoeless after he died halfway into Barone’s master bedroom window around 2 a.m. Friday. But Barone said he does not believe any of his shots could account for the bullet holes in his backyard fence.

“No one has come forward, but that may be because of that Joe Horn thing,” Barone said. “I think (Dunbar) was possibly breaking into another house and was running from another neighbor.”

Barone referred to a November incident in which Pasadena resident Joe Horn fatally shot to death two men burglarizing his next-door neighbor’s home. Questions about the legality of that shooting are expected to be submitted to a grand jury.

Heard struggle outside

Contrary to early accounts of the Barone home shooting issued by the Harris County Sheriff’s Department on Friday, Barone said he was awake and working in his home office before he shot Dunbar.

Barone said he heard two gunshots while he ran to get his pistol from his car in the garage. Barone also said he heard a noise through the back wall of his home that he believes was caused by at least two people banging against the house during a struggle. A screen section of a sliding-glass door was torn off.

Soon after, Barone said, he heard glass breaking in his bedroom.

“I saw an upper torso coming through the window, but it was covered by the curtains,” Barone said. “I fired three shots.”

Barone said he ran out his front door and quickly checked around the outside of his house, then ran back inside.

Back in the bedroom, Barone said he saw an arm still hanging inside the window and he fired another shot “where I thought the head would be.”

Barone had directed his wife, infant daughter and 6-year-old son to hide in a bathtub when chaos erupted around the house, he said. His wife and the baby were asleep on his office couch when the shooting started, and his son was in his own bedroom, Barone said.

“When (people) were in the backyard fighting, I had no intention of going outside or using deadly force or anything like that,” said Barone, 33. “But when I heard glass breaking, I knew something was going to happen. That changed everything.”

Barone said he knows he did the right thing by shooting at Dunbar.

“I was protecting my family,” he said. “I think anyone with a guy coming into their house like that would have done the same thing.”

Sheriff’s Sgt. Rolf Nelson said investigators “are not prepared to comment further” on the circumstances of Dunbar’s shooting.

Barone said he works in the accounting division of a waste company and attends the University of Houston, where he is taking communications courses.

Dunbar lived on Wingdale in the Forest View subdivision, about three blocks away from Barone’s home, records show.

Winnie Constable, who owns the Wingdale home and lived with Dunbar there, declined to comment on the case Monday.

‘Not going anywhere’

Barone said he never met Dunbar.

Barone said he had a large Rottweiler, but the animal died recently from poisoning. He speculated that whoever killed the animal might have been setting up his home for a burglary.

Investigators said Dunbar, 44, had a long criminal history, with a dozen felony arrests in the last 13 years and a half-dozen convictions. Charges included theft and drugs.

“With his extensive criminal background, it’s amazing to me somebody hasn’t already gotten him,” Barone said.

Still, Barone said he feels sorry for any friends or family Dunbar had.

“I know there’s someone out there who loved him and is grieving,” he said. “I am sorry for them.”

Despite his experience, Barone said he has no plans to move from his normally quiet neighborhood, but he will have a burglar alarm installed.

“I’m not going anywhere,” he said.

Japanese Self Defense Pole

sasumata This is an interesting self defense weapon used in Japan called a
Sasumata.
Sasumatas are hanging all over Japanese school buildings and are used to hold or pin a “bad guy” to the wall or floor.  So if someone comes at you with a knife you can keep your distance.  I think this is  a very practical self defense weapon but has some limitations.

1. Gun: Well if the bad guy has a gun you can pin him all you want while he shoots fish in a barrel.  I don’t think guns are legal in Japan so they are probably fine.

2. If it’s in a school buidling a bunch of 5th graders are unlikely strong enough to pin a grown man that’s crazy.  Unless he’s just a giant sissy.

sasumataIf any readers know of any other cool self defense weapons like this in foreign countries let me know and I’ll post it on the site.

Top 10 Dirty Fighting Techniques

When you have to defend yourself there are no rules and there is no shame in what is traditionally called dirty fighting. Ultimately its about making sure you can go home at the end of the night and still be alive and one piece.

Though most of us will never encounter such a situation that doesn’t mean that you won’t be one of those that do. So one thing that anyone learning Self Defense and thinking about their own safety is about what they will do in the situation. Decide in advance that you will fight back and do whatever it takes to survive. That way if and when it happens you won’t be shocked and left unable to react.

Secondly, by deciding this now you prepare yourself for the types of things that you will have to do in order to survive. So here is a list of dirty fighting techniques that you should use if you are in a self defense situation.

1. Eye Gouge
2. Scratching
3. Groin strike
4. Biting
5. Foot Stomp
6. Throat strike
7. Breaking small appendages like fingers. If you can get a hold of one just break it.
8. Headbutt - make sure to use your forehead or you risk injuring yourself
9. Kicking while down - if you get your assailant to the ground kick them in the head or ribs as hard as you can.
10. Weapons - Use your environment. If you can get a lamp, cell phone or anything hard or sharp use it. This is a life or death situation and you have to do what have to do to survive.

In any situation use your judgment. If you are just in a fight I wouldn’t suggest using weapons or kicking your opponent in the head. However, if it an honest self defense situation do whatever it takes to survive.

Street Fight Psychology

One thing we will be exploring more is the psychology and basics of self defense. For most of us who aren’t experienced fighters or haven’t studied fighting sports we simply need to know the basics so that when needed we can react and defend ourselves.

Additionally part of the basics that we have to cover and understand it, and is demonstrated in this video, is nasty fighting. In order to survive you must be willing to fight in the most basic way possible. That is to do whatever it takes to survive. Scratch, Bite, Gouge and break. This video demonstrates how to intelligently use some of these techniques.
